Dawn of A New Era Round 1 Finalists

Having let my fingers slip on the pulse of this contest somewhat I’m not exactly sure when the first round of the Dawn of a New Era round 1 judging ended, but a gallery with all the finalist has been set up at HiveWire 3D. The gallery is derived from the winners of the round one judging held at HiveWire 3D, Renderosity, YURdigital, and Runtime DNA. The selection encompasses a wide range of themes and varying skill levels. There are some outstanding entries. Eliane CK’s “Dawn with robot dog”, and DisparateDreamer’s “Look At Me” (with beautiful digitally painted hair) are my personal favourites. Another piece that grabbed my attention was “Eos” by Voytek, which is a vibrant, outstanding portrait with displaying a high level of technical and artistic skill. I would not be surprised if the piece took out the top prize.

The contest boasts some amazing prizes including cash, software and content. If chronic procrastination wasn’t my greatest talent I would have loved to enter. It is not clear when the final round of judging will conclude. Congratulations and best luck to all Dawn of A New Era finalists.

RealityPaint’s Texture Transformer For Hivewire’s Dawn

Finally, Dawn (still free) has the game changer she has everyone has been waiting for. Thanks to realityPaint’s Texture Transformer, textures for DAZ 3D’s Victoria 4 can now be converted to work with Dawn. The application comes as a stand-alone product and as a plugin for realityPaint. The plugin is free with RP Pro, but it is unclear if it is included with the standard version. On one page it is stated “Free inside realityPaint-Pro or Standard…”, but on the product purchase page there is no mention of Texture Transformer being included with standard. Most likely the information has not been updated.

The below YouTube video states that the stand-alone Texture Transformer is not yet available (video uploaded on the 11th sep), but the realityPaint Update page clearly states the stand-alone version has been released, so we can safely assume the version at Hivewire, RuntimeDNA, Renderosity, and realityPaint is indeed the stand-alone texture converter.

RealityPaint’s products are currently on special at a 20% discount, but if you just want the standalone texture converter than you can pick it up for $34.95 (limited special) from all the participating vendors. If you’re a Hivewire member with reward points you can knock another $10 off this price.

Huge Dawn Promo Render Challenge – Great Prizes

HiveWire 3D – Dawn still free

First and foremost I should point out that Dawn is still a free download from HiveWire 3D (just untick any/all the other bundled products). Maybe you’ve just come out from under a rock and have no idea what Dawn is? Not likely but, but to enlighten those in the dark, Dawn is the new Poser/DAZ Studio figure in town. That’s right she swings both ways… or at least there are two versions available – one version for each program.

Dawn was released back on the 11th(ish?) of August (2013). Since then more than 250 items have been released at the supporting brokerages such as HiveWire 3D, Renderosity, Runtinme DNA, YURdigital, Poser World etc. Renders featuring Dawn have been popping up in every major DAZ/Poser group on deviantART, and community forums everywhere.

The Dawn of a New Era Render Challenge

It seems that Dawn is an assured success, but to push Dawn right out into the spotlight, HiveWire 3D, in conjunction with PoserWorld, Renderosity, RuntimeDNA and YURdigital, are hosting an epic render competition with all these names and more sponsoring the event.

Each of the above communities will be hosting their own separate competition at the round 1 stage. Round 1 winners will then be pooled for the 2 stage of judging. So, if you prefer your spot in say Renderosity or Runtime DNA to posting at one of the other communities, then you are free to submit there. All entries will be anonymous.

3 submissions per community are allowed, and one very cool feature of this competition is that you can enter into any and all the various community competitions. For the ultra productive, this means up to 12 entries can be made, though each entry must be unique (no submitting the same image to multiple communities).

The contest has already opened. Round 1 entries close Oct 29, 2013 (don’t miss it!). In some cases, at least at HiveWire, a submission process hasn’t yet been revealed, but we are informed that all will be in order well before the deadline – just focus on making those render the best possible.

Now, the best part – prizes! [Is that the lizard brain speaking?]
This is one of the biggest community contests of its kind that I have seen. Up for grabs is a combined $1250 cash, 3 copies of Poser Pro 2014, 3 copies of Reality 3 for Poser (or 2.5 for DAZ Studio with free upgrade to 3 when released) and hundreds of dollars worth of gift certificates. Phew, that’s hardly a poke in the eye, but I’d take it anyway.

For full details and contest rules you can find the contest announcement page at your preferred community, but here it is at HiveWire 3D forums.

I expect the various competition judges will have their work cut out for them with a huge stack of high quality submissions. So, participate or admire (or both), it will be a spectacle to behold.

HiveWire3D Store Launch

Dawn is coming but you can join the countdown

Dawn might still be a few weeks away (August 9th), but you can now finally visit HiveWire3D’s store and forums. There is already a good variety of content available from some well-established content creators. The roster currently includes: Lisa’s Botanicals, Songbird ReMix (Ken Gillard), Ryverthron Creations, CWRW, and Nerd 3D – so at the moment there is a very natural environment/wildlife theme to the store. This seem very fitting, but somewhat perplexing to a dystopian urban cyberzombie – where am I meant to recharge?. Undoubtedly more vendors will appear in the lead-up to Dawn’s release and the following frenzy of activity that will undoubtedly ensue with the first waves of her associated content.

So, the first thing you’ll notice about the store is that it isn’t particularly pretty. A little bit of green, black and a lot of white, but everything seems to work very well, and super quick. There are a lot of great features that will make using the site very easy when compared to some of the other similar sites out there that have many clunky and/or …err broken elements. The search feature works wonderfully, but with just over 180 items it is too early to give it a thorough testing and a DigiSprawl stamp of approval. I look forward to a store searching experience that doesn’t involve a trip to Google’s advanced search.

Some other cool store features include:

  • Customisable bundles – pick and choose which items you want)
  • Multiple customisable wishlists – ever feel the need to organise that huge wishlist into themed categories?
  • Never buy the same product twice – handy message on item thumbnail lets you know straight away if you have previously purchased the item from HiveWire3D
10% rebate on purchases in the form of reward points
  • Products pages come with sections for user comments and images

Reward Points

While HiveWire will be utilising coupons, gift certificates, store credit and other stock standard ecommerce currency, they also have a nifty points reward points system (similar to Content Paradise?). Every time you make a purchase in the store you receive the equivalence of 10% back in these points, which can be used in subsequent purchases. One potential bone of contention is that a maximum of 30% of the total value of a cart can be funded with reward points. Of course, 30% off is still 30% off. The points also seem to work fine in conjunction with other specials, coupons etc.

To clarify 100 points = $1

How do you earn points?

I wouldn’t suggest buying things just to accumulate points (unless you want to get rid of that disposable cash as fast as possible), but there are several ways to earn points. The first is by signing up for store membership (1000), and the second by getting on the mailing list (500). The next thing you need to do is have a birthday (preferably as soon as possible) – 1000, win a competition – varies, have an image accepted into the monthly gallery – 500, and refer a friend using your unique referral code (after their first purchase) – 500.

So, $15 bucks worth of points for signing up doesn’t sound bad does it?

HiveWire3D: software inclusive

Given that Dawn comes in both Poser (9+) and DAZ Studio (4.6+) native, and all the talk of unity and such, HiveWire are attempting to include both parties equally. Potentially this could result in cross platform cooperation, learning, and influence unmatched even at the height of the Generation 4 figures, namely the polymorphic digital goddess, Victoria 4. Given the buzz around Dawn right now it is not unforeseeable that Victoria may soon have to come to a power sharing arrangement. The forums have already come to life with a friendly buzz of activity, so why not drop in and say hi.

How the inevitable DS Vs Poser skirmishes are handled remains to be seen, but let’s hope that stays to a minimum.

For content creators

The Hive is looking very attractive for content creators. Other than being a store with a potentially massive market appeal HiveWire3D also offer a very competitive 60/40 split (you/them), with the potential to push this up to 70/30 for higher volume sales. There is no exclusivity, so CCCs can sell here there and everywhere – even the same product (thought that affects the base royalty rate). Obviously given this detail, all rights are reserved by the creators. More info can be found here.
